Dinghy Insurance UK: Cover for Sailing Dinghies and Small Boats

Dinghy insurance is usually a modest policy covering the boat, spars and sails against accidental damage and theft, plus the third-party liability most sailing clubs insist on.

Almost every UK sailing club asks members to hold third-party liability cover before their boat goes in the dinghy park, and many open meetings ask for evidence at registration. That single requirement is why most dinghy owners buy a policy at all — but the accidental damage and theft sections are what save the season when a mast goes over the side or a foil walks out of the park.

Cover for a Laser, a Wayfarer or a foiling Moth costs very little relative to the boat, and the questions are simple. If you have the sail number and a realistic value you can request a dinghy insurance quote quickly.

What a dinghy policy normally includes

The liability section is the part that matters most and costs least. A dinghy can put a hole in a moored yacht, and the resulting bill dwarfs the value of the boat that caused it.

  • Accidental damage to the hull, foils, spars, sails and fittings.
  • Theft of the boat, and often of the trolley, cover and gear.
  • Third-party liability, commonly £2m to £5m, which is what clubs check.
  • Cover in the dinghy park, on the road behind a car, and while afloat.
  • Sometimes a small allowance for personal kit such as buoyancy aids and wetsuits.

Racing, open meetings and travelling

Unlike larger yachts, racing is the normal use case for a dinghy and is generally included as standard rather than treated as an extra risk. What varies is the treatment of the sails and spars while racing: some wordings exclude sails blown out in a gust, or apply age-related deductions to laminate sails.

If you travel to opens and nationals, check the territorial limit. UK and Ireland is standard; European events usually need an extension, particularly where the boat will be left on a trailer in a foreign dinghy park for a week.

Storage, security and the dinghy park

Dinghy parks are semi-public spaces, and insurers know it. Conditions often centre on making the boat and its most portable parts hard to remove: a lock through the trolley, foils and covers stowed in a locked box or taken home, and outboards secured to a bracket rather than left in a tender.

Storage at home tends to attract fewer conditions but underwriters may ask whether the boat is visible from the road. Where a dinghy lives on a trailer, the same hitch-lock advice applies as for larger trailed craft.

Valuing a dinghy sensibly

Class boats hold value in a way that surprises new owners, and a competitive second-hand hull with a new rig and two suits of sails can be worth several times its purchase price a decade ago. Insure for what it would cost to replace with an equivalent boat, and list separately anything unusual — a carbon rig, foils, a launching trolley and road base.

Owners who also sail a larger keelboat should be aware that a dinghy stored aboard as a tender may already be included under the parent boat's policy. Our yacht insurance guide explains how tender cover typically works.

What tends to affect the cost

Cover will depend on the insurer, the policy and your circumstances, and premiums for standard club classes are typically among the lowest in marine insurance.

  • Declared value of hull, rig, sails and foils.
  • Class and whether the boat is a high-performance or foiling design.
  • Where the boat is stored and what security applies.
  • Sailing area — inland water, estuary or open coast.
  • Claims history and, occasionally, the age of the helm.

Frequently asked questions

Does my sailing club require dinghy insurance?
Most UK clubs require third-party liability cover as a condition of membership or dinghy park use, and many specify a minimum limit. Requirements vary between clubs, so check your club's rules.
Am I covered while racing?
Racing is normally included for dinghies, though some policies restrict or exclude sails and spars during racing. The wording will say.
Is the boat covered on the road?
Cover while trailed is commonly included within the stated territory. Damage to the trailer itself and towing liability generally are not — the latter sits with your motor insurance.
Can I insure a foiling or high-performance dinghy?
Yes, though carbon foils and rigs raise the value and the repair cost, so expect more questions and a higher premium than for a standard club class.
